If
you’re an extreme sports enthusiast, Cabarete is one
town you definitely don’t want to miss. Due to a unique combination of
environmental factors, afternoon winds ranging from 15-25 mph draw windsurf
and kite board enthusiasts to Cabarete from all over the world.
The location is so ideal that International Kite boarding Championships
have been held here every year since 2001. And nearby, Playa Encuentro
offers some of the best wave action for surfers. Whether
you arrived with your equipment, need rentals, or even lessons… it’s all
available in Cabarete. Even if you’re not participating, all of the activity
makes Cabarete a great place to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the beach
while you watch the fun on the water.
For nature lovers, just outside Cabarete you will find the entrance to
El Choco National Park, a protected area where visitors
can hike the nearby mountain, ride horses, or explore underground in ancient
caves.
Back in town, the main street of Cabarete is lined with small stores
and restaurants. It’s a great place to have a meal or snack,
shop for artwork, jewelry, clothing, or find that essential piece of sporting
equipment that you’ve been looking for!
But the fun is just beginning, because if you think that daytime in Cabarete
is exciting, wait until the sun goes down! That’s when the mix of cultures
really lend a Bohemian atmosphere to this small town. Casual, fashionable
dress is the norm as bars and restaurants place tables
and lounge chairs directly on the beach as evening approaches. It’s the
perfect atmosphere to unwind and tell stories about all of your day’s
activities. A little later in the evening, bars and restaurants convert
into discos with live music and dancing and the fun continues
until the early hours of the morning. The crowds are young and hip, with
a mix of locals and visitors from all over the world enjoying the tropical
night on the beach.
Cabarete is one town you shouldn’t miss… and it’s just
a short ride from Puerto Plata and Sosua!
